Based on others' reviews I asked a friend to help me install it. I didn't have to remove the heat muffler's heat shields, nor did I remove the spare tire. It took a little work to wiggle the piece in (it's a tight fit, but if you are patient, it'll go in). The holes align just fine, but it is so tight, you really have to be patient to get them aligned. They are very tight, so it's hard to get the screws in... I even thought they did not match the threading, but after trying without the hitch I saw they went in just fine, you just have to be perfectly aligned. Once the first one goes in, then it becomes a lot easier. Notice there are two size of screws.
I guess you could do it by yourself but it would be a LOT of hassle to get it in. With the two of us it took us about 15 minutes to set it in place. (Dealer wanted $200 to install and if you bought the part with them, it cost more than twice what I paid in Amazon!).

put this product on a cx-9 and after the reviews saw how it could be difficult but have a suggestion for those with a cx-9.
Instead of pulling your hair out trying to manuever the reciever around I found the when I took off the drivers side exhaust tip (2 bolts that need PB Blaster and a 14mm socket or wrench and some love :D). the reciever was able to be mounted with no obstructions and fit perfectly into the vehicle. Doing this installation yourself rather than taking it to a dealer will save you in the range of 100-200 bucks depending on how long the person installing it at the deal wants to take.
In all the reciever performs as advertised and was relatively easy to put in with a set of ramps and the proper tools:
3/4" socket
7/16" socket
ratchet
14mm wrench and socket
a decent sized hammer
PB Blaster to remove rust and make the exhaust tip nuts come out easier
took myself about 1.5 hours to do with some help from the fiance and alot of patience.

I had no problems mounting this receiver on our 2007 Mazda CX-9. The shipment arrived about 5 days after ordering. From other posts, I had expected to remove part of the exhaust system to line up the holes. However, we were able to match up everything without removing any other parts. It really was fairly easy with two people. BTW, all the necessary mounting bolts came with the receiver. I also purchased the hitch and T-connector wiring made for my vehicle. I found the wiring instructions fairly clear...although it did take me 1-2 hours to wire the lights. This was mostly due to the time required to remove the rear panels and run the power wire up to the battery. It would have been easier if the Mazda had been on a lift rather than in our driveway!
